Community Engagement to Enhance Educational Outcomes for Boys

This course will examine research and best-practice in approaches to boys' education within the context of the community influences on a school. While recognising that girls also benefit from effective family and community partnerships, this course will focus primarliy on the benefit to educational outcomes for boys. Issues of gender in school will be examined from a socio-cultural perspective and research related to improving academic and affective outcomes for boys will be presented. The course will examine the principles of community engagement, as well as effective models of strengthening school-community partnerships. The practical issues associated with establishing and maintaining good relationships between a school and its community, will be explored through case studies of best practice.

ObjectivesUpon completion of this course, students will be expected to:

1. have developed an understanding of the impact of gender, class, race and socioeconomics on educational outcomes for boys
2. have a knowledge of effective pedogocial approaches to enhance the educational outcomes of boys
3. have developed an understanding of the benefits to educational outcomes of effective family-school partnerships
4. have a knowledge of the processes and skills required to successfully build school community partnerships.
5. critically reflected on how personal beliefs and attitudes can influence professional responsibilities in regards to gender and school-community engagement.
ContentDuring this course students will:

1. Critically analyse case studies and scenarios of family-school partnerships
2. Develop an understanding of the socio-cultural context of education
3. Develop an understanding of the impact of gender in education
4. Develop a knowledge and understanding of models of community engagment.
5. Critically analyse the pedaogical implications of community, gender and family
6. Develop knowledge of effective practice to address identified student academic and affective needs related to gender, community, family.
