Pedagogies of Reading and Writing: Birth to 12 Years

This course will explore current research on children's language acquisition and development (birth to 12 years). It will also explore the teaching, learning, and assessment of reading (including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and text comprehension); as well as instructional approaches for developing pre-school and primary school children's concepts of print, grammar, punctuation, spelling, handwriting, and written expression. The course will explore how to interpret formal and informal literacy data, to support children's literacy development. Attention will be given to the selection and use of age-appropriate and culturally diverse children's literature in teaching and learning.

Objectives Upon completion of this course, students will have the capability to:
1. identify the key stages in children's language acquisition (from Birth to 12 years);
2. apply a range of models of pedagogy for teaching and assessing the components of reading (including strategies for teaching and assessing phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and text comprehension);
3. apply instructional approaches for developing children's concepts of print, grammar, punctuation, spelling, handwriting, and written expression;
4. interpret formal and informal literacy assessment data;
5. consider the relative impact of literacy practices in the home, child language development and the diverse language backgrounds of students in order to make informed decisions about student literacy needs;
6. demonstrate intercultural awareness and inclusiveness;
7. discuss the concept of multiliteracies; and
8. apply strategies for teaching and assessing the composition of digital and multi-modal texts.

Essays / Written Assignments 30%, 1,000 words or equivalent; Annotate an age-appropriate multimodal childrens text and discuss how this text could be used to support childrens literacy development.
Case Scenario/PBL exercises 40%, 1,500 words or equivalent; Analysis of student written work; Provision of feedback on student work; Rating of student work against developmental scales and system-wide literacy data.
