Provides an overview of technology education. It is designed to introduce students to the policy, practicalities and research which underpins technology education. The course will also examine the ways in which technology education can be used to support and extend student learning. Attention is given to the integration of theory and practice, and in particular, the application of research findings to computer usage in education.

Objectives To provide students with the opportunity to explore ways in which technology is employed in educational settings and gain a basic understanding of the issues which relate to its use.
To provide students with the opportunity to explore the distinctions between the notions of "educational technology", "design based education" and "technology education".
Content This course will explore current issues in relation to technology, and relate this to wider educational research and practice. Key content areas will include:
* An introduction to technology education;
* A consideration of the roles of policy in technology education;
* Current issues in technology education;
* Research underpinning of technology education; and
* Depth study of a specific technology- computer technology

Essays / Written Assignments This essay will examine the major roles that technology may play in educational settings and require students to discuss, with reference to relevant research materials, how the use of technology might change the educative experience of the students. Length: approx 1500 words.
Essays / Written Assignments This essay will require students to examine the importance of technology education in modern educational settings. Students will be expected to make reference to relevant research literature and policy documents and critically examine the use of specific technologies to justify the inclusion of technology education in a given context. Length: approx. 1500 words.
Other: (please specify) Depth Study Resource - This item will assess students' ability to use a given technology - computer technology - as an exemplar of the value of technology in communication. Students will prepare an Internet resource which relates to an agreed section of the learning program.
