This course explores current issues and trends in teaching and learning Economics, Business Studies, Legal Studies, and Commerce; and the role and value of these areas of study in the NSW HSIE curriculum, and their place in the K-12 HSIE learning continuum. Students will explore lesson planning, programming, course and assessment requirements of the NSW School Certificate and Higher School Certificate, and strategies, technologies, and resources for teaching and learning these various Stage 4/5, and 6 HSIE curriculum domains. Particular attention will also be given to the overlapping concepts operating within these curricula, and their contribution to civics and citizenship education.

ObjectivesUpon completion of this course, students will have the capacity to:

1. Discuss the role and value of studying Economics, Business Studies, Legal Studies, and Commerce.
2. Articulate the place of Economics, Business Studies, Legal Studies, and Commerce within the NSW K-12 HSIE learning continuum.
3. Develop lesson plans, programs and assessment tasks for Stage 6 Economics, Business Studies, and Legal Studies; and Stage 5 Commerce.
4. Use a range of strategies, technologies and resources for teaching and assessing Stage 6 Economics, Business Studies, and Legal Studies,; and Stage 5 Commerce.
5. Discuss current issues and trends related to the teaching of Economics, Business Studies, Legal Studies, and Commerce in schools.
6. Understand the overlapping concepts operating within Economics, Business Studies, and Commerce curricula.
7. Discuss the contribution of Economics, Business Studies, Legal Studies, and Commerce to civics and citizenship education.
