Aboriginal and Contemporary Issues in Education

This course is divided into two parts. One part will allow students to choose from a range of educationally-oriented electives offered by staff of the School of Education. The other part will develop students' understanding of Aboriginal culture and the challenges faced by Aboriginal students when they attend formal institutions such as schools that are not part of Aboriginal culture. This second part on Aboriginal culture will be taken by all students.

Objectives
(1) Final year students will be able to extend their teaching expertise in an area of particular interest to them. (2) Students will develop an understanding of the behaviour and attitudes of Aboriginal students and will develop skills that will help Aboriginal students to learn.
Content
For the elective part of the course, there will be a weekly two hour lecture/seminar for ten weeks. For the Aboriginal Education part, there will be weekly two hour contact by staff of the School of Aboriginal Studies for eleven weeks. This will be in the form of a lecture/tutorial.

Transition
Students who fail EDUC4076, EDUC4075 or EDUC4074, or who have yet to complete these courses, will undertake EDUC4073 instead.

Essays / Written Assignments
Students are expected to produce approximately 2500 words or their equivalence (eg. presentation of a seminar, field trips) for both parts of the course. Both the Aboriginal Education part and the elective part will have at least two assessment items, with one assessment item due sufficiently early within the semester to provide feedback to student about their progress. Students' marks for the two parts of the course will be added together to reach a final mark. Students must pass both parts of the course to be eligible to pass.
