This course explores the psychology of physical activity behaviour. It is focused on understanding how to improve sporting performance at the elite level and how to increase physical activity and exercise adherence in schools and the general population.

Objectives Upon completion of this course, students will be expected to:
* demonstrate an understanding of applied sport related psychological concepts such as anxiety, motivation, and social reinforcement;
* apply sport psychological intervention strategies using mental preparation, imagery, selective attention and motivation;
* identify and demonstrate an understanding of physical activity behaviour to develop appropriate interventions for children and adolescents;
* demonstrate knowledge and skills related to increasing motivation in physical education;
* become familiar with recent research regarding sport and exercise psychology and interventions to promote physical activity.
Content The following content will be covered in this course:
* Social facilitation and reinforcement;
* Anxiety and stress, arousal, concentration and attention control;
* Motivation strategies for sport, exercise and physical education;
* Mental preparation and imagery, goal setting;
* Physical/mental relaxation, attributions in sport;
* Exercise adherence and behaviour modification strategies;
* Theories of physical activity behaviour change;
* Interventions to promote physical activity, and
* Psychological strategies for injured athletes.

Examination: Formal Assessment Item 3: Students will complete a formal examination assessing all aspects of the course.

Reports Assessment Item 2: Applied sport and exercise psychology lab reports- students will submit their completed sport and exercise lab reports at the end of semester.
