Pedagogy and Inclusion

This course introduces students to the understanding of pedagogy as both the discourse and practice of teaching. It will explore the policy, politics, and practice of socially-critical approaches to pedagogy and inclusive education. Students will be challenged to see teachers as transformative intellectuals. They will attempt to practice inclusive teaching, and demonstrate their attainment of graduate teacher standards during a full time 20 day block of professional experience in a Secondary school setting, and have an opportunity to engage in the full life of the school including student sport, playground supervision, faculty/grade/stage meetings and school activities and functions, as required.

The University of Newcastle, the NSW Institute of Teachers and our education partners in schools and centres require that all students demonstrate a commitment to professional teaching practice by attending and engaging in lectures, tutorials and other activities provided by the university within our Teacher Education programs.

Students’ professional commitment to teaching will be assessed by a 100% attendance requirement at sessions indicated as compulsory in the course outline. These lectures are compulsory because they present information that is critical to successful completion of the placement.

Attendance will be recorded on rolls available at the entrance to lecture theatres and/or tutorial rooms. Students should ensure that they allow sufficient time to be marked as present and provide adequate identification.

Students who arrive late and leave early without prior arrangement with the course coordinator will be deemed to have not completed the attendance requirement. If students leave the activity early and fail to identify themselves a second roll will be taken upon conclusion to the activity.

If a student fails to attend a compulsory session the student is responsible for contacting course coordinator within three (3) working days to request permission to complete a supplementary assessment task. This task will cover the same information that was in the missed session. These tasks will be pass/fail only and will not include written feedback. All replacement tasks are to be submitted at least two weeks before the commencement of the placement. Students who have not complied with any of these requirements will not be provided with a placement.

Objectives
Upon completion of this course, students will demonstrate a capacity to:

1. Understand pedagogy as both discourse and practice.
2. Understand the core concepts of critical pedagogy.
3. Promote equity in classrooms through inclusive teaching.
4. Attain graduate teacher standards through professional experience.
5. Teach their subject methods using a variety of strategies and technologies.
6. Engage in the full life of school including student sport, playground supervision, faculty/grade/stage meetings and
school activities and functions.
7. Engage in critical reflection on their professional practice.

Students who have completed EDUC3023 and EDST3060 will be deemed to have completed EDUC3195.

Assignment 3 - Pass / Fail

In this assignment you will write a personal reflection on your progress towards each element of the NSW institute of Teachers Professional Teaching Standards (Graduate Teacher Level), and your capacity to engage in Inclusive Teaching. Based on your professional learning during your placement, and linked to specific examples or events from your own practice teaching, you should provide description about how confident and how competent you are with regard to each of the standards. You will be assessed on your capacity for professional reflection, using the Professional Teaching Standards and the NSW Quality Teaching framework, not on your level of accomplishment (which will already have been assessed by your cooperating teacher during the placement). You do not need to drill down to the level of each aspect of each element, however you may find looking at these useful during your reflections.

All assessment tasks are compulsory course requirements that need to be passed in order to pass the course. If a student fails an assessment task the student is responsible for contacting the course coordinator within five (5) working days from the date that the marked assignment is returned to request permission to resubmit the assignment. A single resubmission will be allowed per assignment.
NB: If a student fails the placement component of assessment requirements, the student is deemed to have failed the course.
Presentations - Group
Assignment 1 - Pass/Fail

Students will form groups of two or three. Each group will nominate one week from the schedule in which they will lead the seminar.

As seminar leaders they will present on the assigned readings and engage the tutorial group in a response to a series of critical questions they have generated.

Readings for each week will be drawn from the set texts, and may be supplement from the recommended list if required.
Reports
Assignment 2 - Pass/Fail

Your Professional Experience report must evidence successful completion of 20 days of full-time, supervised professional experience as a pre-service teacher in a secondary school setting (ie. that you have made at least satisfactory progress towards achieving the NSW Professional Teaching Standards at Graduate competence level).
