This course will explore current research on young children's expressive and receptive verbal, non-verbal, and written communication (including drawing). The course will explore pedagogical approaches for developing children's multimodal communication, and how to interpret and analyse data gathered through different forms of observation and assessment. The course will encourage participants to understand communication as a social and cultural practice.

Objectives Upon completion of this course, students will have the capability to:

1. Identify key stages in the development of children's expressive and receptive verbal, non-verbal, and written communication (including drawing).
2. Demonstrate strategies for effective communication with young children.
3. Plan activities for children that promote the development of multimodal communication skills.
4. Recognise atypical language development and strategies for supporting children's literacy needs.
5. Recognise behaviour as a form of communication.
6. Interpret and analyse data gathered through different forms of observation and assessment.
7. Understand communication as a social and cultural practice influenced by literacy practices in the home, and the diverse language backgrounds of students.
