Examines historical, social, cultural and political perspectives which have influenced the development of early childhood services for children from birth to eight years. Students will be expected to demonstrate understanding of these influences on the current provision of early childhood services, and understanding of government policy and legislation as it relates to the establishment and maintenance of services.

Objectives Students will demonstrate:
1. understanding of influences on social policy and the provision of early childhood services.
2. understanding of policy and legislation as it relates to the establishment and maintenance of services.
3. understanding of the key role played by children's services in supporting the diverse strengths and needs of children and families.
4. skills in research, media analysis, policy analysis.
5. collaborative learning and teamwork skills.
Content Topics include:
. Historical, social, cultural and political influences on children's services.
. Views of childhood and families and implications for policy and services.
. Nature, diversity and function of children's services.
. Current policy initiatives.
. Ways in which policy and services address inequality.
. Service models.
. Future directions.
