Developmental Foundations of Early Childhood 2

Examines various theoretical perspectives on cognitive development from conception, through infancy, and early childhood to age eight. Focuses on theory and research relating to early brain development, intelligence and multiple intelligences, giftedness, concept development, learning, and play at particular stages of development and the implications for early childhood education. Students extend understandings of methods of studying development and skills in observing, interpreting and planning for cognitive development.

Objectives Students will demonstrate:
1. understandings of different theoretical perspectives on cognitive development.
2. understandings of research processes and findings relating to cognitive development.
3. understandings of developmental processes and characteristics of cognition at different stages of early childhood.
4. understanding and skills in observing, analysing, interpreting and documenting children's development.
5. understanding of, and skills in, planning for concept development across the early childhood years.
6. collaborative learning and teamwork skills.
7. skills in communicating with peers, parents and other professionals.
