This course examines concepts and theories from educational, social and developmental psychology as they pertain to learning. The course provides opportunities for pre-service teachers to develop knowledge and understanding of learners and the process of learning, and their implications for educational planning and practice.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students will be expected to:

* Understand typical developmental trends in students as they move through all stages of schooling
* Understand individual differences in development
* Understand current theories of learning
* Understand individual differences in learning behaviours and outcomes
* Understand the role of developmental and learning theories in informing teaching practice

Content

The course focuses on key issues associated with child and adolescent development and on current learning theory. Typically, the developmental component of the course will cover such areas as intellectual, social, personal and moral development. The learning theory component of the course will typically address areas such as information processing, metacognitive theory and affective influences on learning.

EDUC1003 and EDST1000.

Transition

Students who have completed either EDUC1003 or EDST1000 will be deemed to have met the requirements for this course.

Assessment Items

Essays / Written Assignments	The essay will cover the development of the child, from birth to adulthood. Students will prepare a 1600 word essay, addressing a specific topic area and assessment criteria.
Examination: Formal	The examination will cover learning theory. Students will be required to respond to set examination questions during Week 13.
Quiz - Class	Students will be required to have an understanding of course content and readings. There will be a series of quizzes which will contribute to progressive assessment throughout the course.
