This course provides an introduction to curriculum studies as a field of scholarly inquiry and professional practice. The course explores conceptual frameworks for understanding curriculum discourse and design. During this course students will learn to place curricula in their spatial and socio-historical contexts. It will introduce students to lesson planning formats, and assist them to begin building a pedagogical repertoire relevant to the requirements and demands of the mandatory curriculum of their major teaching specialisation. Special attention will be given to the curriculum continuum (particularly the links between Stage 3 and 4) for each specialisation.

Objectives Upon completion of this course, students will be expected to:

1. understand the multiple discourses that inform curriculum theory and design;
2. understand the institutionalised processes of curriculum development in Australia;
3. understand the central concepts, modes of inquiry, content structures, and syllabus requirements in NSW of the Mandatory curriculum of their major disciplinary specialisation;
4. understand the socially, geographically, and historically situated nature of curriculum; and
5. understand how to design challenging, engaging and supportive lessons and lesson sequences.
Content Within the series of shared lectures the focus will be upon:

* Conceptual frameworks for understanding curriculum discourse and design.
* Historical models of, and future possibilities for, curriculum as policy and practice.
* Issues and trends in curriculum studies.
* An overview of the statutory and regulatory bodies involved in, and the process of, curriculum development in Australia.
* The relationship between curriculum and pedagogy.

Within specialist lectures and tutorials the focus will be upon:

* The New South Wales (NSW) K-12 Continuum as it manifests within specific disciplinary specialisations.
* The central concepts, modes of inquiry, content structures and requirements of the Mandatory curriculum (typically
Stage 4, or Stage 4 and 5) of the relevant disciplinary specialisation in NSW.
* Comparative analysis of the mandatory components of the NSW curriculum document for a specialty area with mandatory components of the syllabi from other states, territories or nations.
* The design of challenging, engaging and supportive lesson sequences.
* Principles for gathering and analysing resources for teaching their disciplinary specialisation in schools.
