This course will develop students' understanding and appreciation of play as a valuable pursuit in childhood and as a means of achieving optimal educational development . Students will be given the opportunity to observe, plan, teach and evaluate play frames and experiences in early childhood sites 0 - 5 yrs.

Professional Experience: this course has a compulsory professional experience component including 5 rolling days and a full time block placement of 15 days.

Objectives Upon completion of this course, students will be expected to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of the importance of play;
2. Demonstrate knowledge and critical understanding of theories of play;
3. Critically evaluate play materials and play environments;
4. Observe and identify the types of play children engage in;
5. Observe, plan, implement and evaluate a range of play experiences;
6. Recognise the emergent curriculum as an integral part of the planning process in early childhood.

- classical, modern and contemporary theories of play
- suitability and safety of play environments
- the role of play materials in enabling children to explore their world
- a variety of observation techniques and planning formats
- curriculum approaches across early childhood

All assessment tasks are compulsory course requirements that need to be passed in order to pass the course. If a student fails an assessment task the student is responsible for contacting the course coordinator within five (5) working days from the date that the marked assignment is returned to request permission to resubmit the assignment. A single resubmission will be allowed per assignment.
NB: If a student fails the placement component of assessment requirements, the student is deemed to have failed the course.
