Designed to develop students understanding of the nature of language and literacy and how children learn to be effective language and literacy users. On this theoretical basis, students will develop teaching skills that enable them to effectively support and assess language and literacy development. Students are required to undertake field experiences in schools.

Contact hours: 3 hours per week

Objectives Students will develop understandings of the nature of reading and writing. On this theoretical basis students will develop strategies for planning developmentally appropriate assessment strategies in K-6 settings. Students will also develop understandings of current state syllabus documents.
Content 1. A functional view of language; text types and grammar
2. Reading: the nature of processes, supporting and assessing childrens' reading development
3. Writing: the nature of the processes, supporting and assessing childrens' writing development
4. Community literacies
5. The interdependence of language and literacy learning and the implications for planning;
6. planning for language and literacy learning
