Foundations of Child Development

Examines development from conception through infancy, early childhood to age twelve. Students develop an understanding of developmental concepts, principles and processes and various theoretical perspectives relating to child development, and the implications for early childhood education. Particular attention is paid to critical engagement with research and theory within the Australian socio-cultural context.

Objectives Upon completion of this course, students will be expected to:

1. understand different theoretical perspectives on all developmental domains and their interrelationships.
2. understand developmental concepts, principles and processes.
3. understand the complexity of contextual factors that influence development.
4. understand, and have skills in studying children's development.
5. understand ways to support development.
6. critically engage with theory and research in the field.
