Introduces the profession of teaching. Students are expected to act as novice teachers and to observe practising teachers. Students will be introduced to various aspects of teaching including planning for teaching, teaching techniques, pedagogical models, teaching as a professional, legal and ethical aspects of teaching, motivating students to learn, and identifying and assisting students who are experiencing problems at schools and Early Childhood Centres. One focus will be learners and what effective teachers must know about learners and theories of learning. A computer competency requirement is attached to this course as part of the School of Education's commitment to developing technology skills in novice teachers.

Objectives Students will have:
1. begun to think of themselves as novice teachers embarking on a four year course which will prepare them for entry into the teaching profession;

2. taken on the role of teacher;

3. developed their ability to observe carefully in educational settings; and

4. demonstrate how teaching can be informed by theories of learning.
Content Planning for teaching; child protection procedures; teaching techniques; observing in schools and early childhood centres; motivation to learn; legal aspects of teaching; occupational health and safety; social and emotional wellbeing in schools and early childhood centres; teaching as a profession; ethical aspects of teaching; Quality Teaching Model of pedagogy.

Essays / Written Assignments Task 1: 1500 word assignment (30%) - Analysis of peer teaching
Task 2: 2000 word assignment(40%) - Analysing behaviours of classroom teachers
Examination: Formal Examination: (30%) - Using scenarios based on life in classrooms
Other: (please specify) As part of the three assessment items noted above, students must complete two peer-teaching exercises, undertake three school visits, and pass the computer competency hurdle.
