Young children's worlds involve communication through multiple literacies. This course will explore current frameworks, pedagogies, and technologies to support the development of multiple literacies through Early Childhood education. Students will have the opportunity to explore contemporary issues in Early Childhood literacy learning, and apply their understanding in the development of a multimodal Early Childhood literacy curriculum.

Objectives

This course provides students with the opportunity to:
1. discuss and apply current pedagogical frameworks for multiple literacies in Early Childhood;
2. critically engage with current issues in Early Childhood literacy education;
3. critically examine literacy curriculum for young children; and
4. evaluate technologies for literacy learning in the early Childhood context.

Essays / Written Assignments

2,500 words or equivalent. This is a group assignment. Groups of students will be allocated (in negotiation), to three topics. Each student will write an individual seminar paper (essay) on one specific aspect of their group’s topic. Each group will lead a class seminar on their topic. Groups will be of approximately even size, according to the size of the class. Topics will be made available on Blackboard at the beginning of the semester.

Essays / Written Assignments

Students will write a 2,500 word or equivalent critically informed and scholarly response to an hypothetical call for public input to a review of a current early years literacy policy or curriculum. Details of the policy to be analysed will be available on Blackboard at the beginning of the semester.
