Special Education for Early Childhood

Develops understanding and skills for working in early childhood settings (0-8 years) with children with special needs. The course satisfies the New South Wales Government's requirement that a person seeking employment as a teacher in the NSW public education system must have completed a course containing special education content.

Objectives
Upon the completion of this course, students will be expected to demonstrate:
1. awareness of the special needs of infants and young children within a variety of early childhood settings;
2. practical skills based on current research and proven practice in the field of early childhood special education; and
3. awareness of their personal responsibilities in the field of early childhood special education.
Content
Topics include:
. the child with special needs and his/her family
. integration and inclusion/inclusive practices
. assessment and recognition of special needs
. program development, implementation and evaluation
. professional relationships between educators, parents and other professionals
