Provides beginning teachers with the opportunity to explore current issues in early childhood education in relationship to their emerging professional persona. Students will be encouraged to critically analyse contemporary global trends in early childhood and develop a defensible image of a teacher that will form the basis for their Internship experience (BEd students) or initial employment as a teacher (BECT).

Objectives As a result of participating in this course, students will be expected to:

1. locate their personal philosophy of teaching and learning within contemporary belief systems;

2. defend their personal philosophical position on a range of contemporary issues relating to early childhood;

3. understand the importance of reflective practice;

4. understand the contribution made to quality teaching and learning by processes of appraisal, professional development and lifelong learning;

5. develop a professional development plan for the early years of their teaching career.
Content The purpose of this course is to assist students with their initial transition to the workplace as a teacher. Different student groups will have different needs, but the areas to be addressed are:

* diversity, social justice and power;

* the politics of teaching;

* appraisal, professional development and lifelong learning;

* current issues confronting early childhood practitioners.

Students will develop a personal philosophy of teaching and learning and defend it according to contemporary schools of thought in general and contemporary attitudes and approaches to early childhood in particular.
Other: (please specify) Professional Development Plan (BECT students only) 50% 2500 words Due week 14 Students will set goals for an initial period of employment as a teacher (1-2 years). Additionally, they will be required to outline their intended methods of achievement and indicators that could be used to measure success.

Individual Learning Contract (BEd students only) 50% 2500 words Due week 14 In consultation with the lecturer, students will negotiate individual projects connected with fieldwork. Examples could include the preparation of an in depth teaching and learning resource associated with a specific area of learning, or the analysis of videorecordings of personal classroom
