Contexts of Critical Literacies

Introduces the concept of critical literacy and places it in the context of institutional settings. Addresses the notion of critical literacy and provides historical, social and political contexts in which to critique educational discourses as they appear in policy and curriculum documents. The construction of contemporary schooling and its implications for teachers, learners and society are examined.

Objectives 1. Understand the relationships among literacy, language, communication and thinking.
1.1 Knowledge of theories of language and critical literacy
1.2 Understand the concept of critical literacy within an ecological model
2. Explain the social, political and historical discourses within which educational texts are constructed
2.1 Identify elements of educational texts that are generated by discourses of power
2.2 Explain ways in which schooling can be influenced by socially and politically generated influences and movements
3. Critically examine ways in which powerful discourses operate within schools
3.1 Appreciate the links between concepts of literacy and social responsibility in a democratic society
4. Critically analyse varying approaches to language and literacy
Content 1. Notions of critical literacy
2. Educational texts in political, social and historical contexts
3. Boundaries within which texts are constructed
4. Contexts of literacy - socially constructed and powerful
5. Contexts of literacy - the variety of texts available in a developed western society
6. Critical literacy in educational settings - schools, systems, governments particuarly in relation to CALD
7. Critical literacy and access and equity including CALD
