Early Childhood Literacies

Extends student knowledge of early literacy to explore the multiple literacies included in the concept of literacy as social practice, including everyday texts, information technology, popular culture, and languages and literacies other than English. Students develop the ability to fulfil their central role in developing inclusive literacy practices that support children's early literacy in range of social and cultural contexts.

Objectives As a result of participating in this course, students will be expected to:
1. demonstrate an understanding of current definitions of literacy;
2. be familiar with the perspective of literacies as sets of socially constructed practices;
3. analyse literacy practices which privilege and marginalize groups of children;
4. assess literacy practices that develop home/preschool/school congruence in literacy and that incorporate popular culture and Information Technology;
5. respond critically to the reflection of issues of diversity in children's literature.
Content 1. Theoretical perspectives on literacy.
2. Multiple literacies.
3. Literacy practices in early childhood settings and their influence on children's developing sense of identity.
4. Strategies to develop congruence between literacies at home and in early childhood services.
5. The use of technology to support children's literacy and to develop literacy profiles.
6. The use and evaluation of a range of computer programs designed for use in early childhood settings.
7. Critical viewing and reading.
8. Literacy and popular culture.
