Supporting Children with Special Educational Needs

Explores issues, attitudes and concepts relevant to the education of children with special educational needs. Students will develop an awareness of the individual and family needs of children with disabilities or who are considered to be at risk because their needs differ in some way. They will also develop knowledge of instructional techniques and practices designed to maximise the effectiveness of teaching and learning experiences for children with special educational needs in regular classrooms.

ObjectivesUpon the completion of this course, students will be expected to demonstrate:

1. awareness and recognition of the characteristics and behaviours of children who have special educational needs or who are at risk;

2. awareness of the individual and family needs of those children;

3. a basic knowledge of the nature of specific disabilities and special educational needs of children with diverse abilities, and strategies designed to assist these children;

4. knowledge and skills required to select, adapt, or design and implement effective programs for all children;

5. knowledge of current trends and policies associated with the education of children with diverse abilities and needs;

6.understanding of inclusive practices, and knowledge of support services and resources which may be accessed by classroom teachers;

7.knowledge of the role of teachers as agents of change, responding to or initiating change designed to enhance the learning opportunities or outcomes for children with diverse needs and to foster the development of an inclusive school community.
Content1. Introduction to disability and exceptionality, children with special educational needs, integration and inclusion, and associated issues and challenges for children and their families/carers
2. Including children with diverse abilities and needs
3. Instructional models, techniques and programming approaches
4. Assessment strategies for children with special educational needs
5. Curriculum adaptations and use of technology
6. Literacy,numeracy and language difficulties: remediation of difficulties
7. Catering for children with other exceptional needs (gifted and talented, NESB, chronically ill)
8. Developing social competency / Encouraging positive behaviour
9. Transitions (to school, from primary to secondary, post-secondary)
