Professional Experience 1 is the first in a series of field experiences that allow the student to link theory to practice through stages that are sequential, cumulative and complementary. Students will link theory to practice by observing a variety of children's learning experiences to associated lectures. Students will have the opportunity to plan, teach and evaluate lessons within the context of the specialisation.

Objectives As a result of participating in this course students will be expected to be able to identify:
1. Attributes of a reflective practitioner;
2. Links between content and strategies in learning;
3. Alternatives in classroom management;
4. The role of literacy and communication in the classroom;
5. The role of the teacher in the context of the centre/school, the system and the community.
Content 1. Techniques in observation and evaluation;
2. Critical and reflective practice of teachers;
3. Observing lessons and classroom practice, evaluation techniques and strategies;
4. Ways in which a teaching experience is constructed;
5. Observing and evaluating techniques of classroom management;
6. Literacy and communication in educational settings;
7. Teacher roles and responsibilities.

Students are expected to attend all professional experience orientation sessions. Attendance of less than 90% will result in students not being allowed to proceed to the professional experience site.
