Focuses on the development of critical awareness, individual skill development and the acquisition of a positive arts self-concept. Through the investigation of arts as social semiotics, students will develop a fundamental understanding of key concepts in music and visual arts, and extend their current level of aesthetic awareness.

Objectives As a result of participating in this course, students will be expected to:
1. display an understanding of the fundamental musical concepts (beat, rhythm, pitch, tempo, tone colour, dynamics and form);
2. use standard notation to read and write elementary pieces of music;
3. confidently perform a range of elementary pieces of music using voices and instruments;
4. display an understanding of the fundamental elements of art (line, space, colour, shape, texture and value) and principles of design (rhythm, movement, balance, proportion, emphasis, variety, harmony and unity);
5. use these elements and principles to produce art objects;
6. develop and use a shared metalanguage with which artistic processes can be analysed and discussed;
7. critically respond to their own artistic endeavours and those of others.

Other: (please specify) Musicianship Test (or equivalent) 30% To be administered in three parts throughout the semester (10% for each part). The test will concentrate on the aural, musical reading and writing skills of the students and the application of fundamental musical concepts addressed in class.
Other: (please specify) Group Performance (or equivalent) 20% Students will be provided will elementary vocal and instrumental arrangements of standard children's songs. These arrangements should be performed in a group, and can be innovated upon. Students should be awarded marks for individual performance within the group, and not share marks with all other members of their group. Performances should demonstrate accurate intonation, rhythmic skills and sensitive ensemble skills
Other: (please specify) Visual Arts Process Journal (or equivalent) 25% Students should compile a reflective journal that charts their work through the semester. This journal should include examples or photographs of the work and include sections for descriptions of the processes undertaken as well as a record of the skills and knowledge acquired.
Other: (please specify) Artwork (or equivalent) 25% Object plus 500 word commentary This work should be undertaken in addition to the art making in class. Students will prepare a short (500 words) explanation of the major elements and principles embodied in the work.
