Professional Experience - Early Childhood Education

Introduces the variety of early childhood services and the range of staff roles within these services. It will focus on the provision of high quality programs for birth to eight-year old children. Key elements of education for birth to eight-year-olds will be studied; these will include adult-child interactions, caregiving routines, play, developmentally appropriate practice and planning for individuals' needs. Emphasis will be placed on an approach that recognises children as active participants in their own learning.

Objectives As a result of participating in this subject, students will be expected to:
1. recognise the diversity of services available;
2. compare common elements of curriculum across early childhood settings;
3. identify major stakeholders;
4. analyse routines and practices to determine the integrated nature of early childhood learning experiences
5. demonstrate a beginning understanding of early childhood curriculum.

2. Quality services and how it is determined
3. The early childhood curriculum - stakeholders, components and contexts
4. The role and importance of interactions, caregiving routines and play in early childhood
5. Fundamental caregiving skills
6. The place of health, safety and nutrition in a high quality program
7. Interagency initiatives
8. Appropriate practice and emergent curriculum

This assessment item is based on service/centre visits and will be awarded an ungraded pass/fail.

Students must pass this item in order to pass the course.

Students are expected to attend all professional experience orientation sessions. Attendance of less than 90% will result in student not being allowed to proceed to the Professional Experience site.
Reports Field Experience Report (equivalent 3000 words): Analysis of routines and practices in early childhood settings and record of teaching.

This assessment item will be awarded an ungraded pass/fail.
