Develops understanding of the nature of teacher's work and the contexts in which it is carried out. It introduces students to the roles and responsibilities of the teacher, and the relationships among teachers as individuals, professional roles, pedagogical practices, and promotes students' understandings of the profession of teaching.

Objectives

As a result of participating in this subject, students will be expected to demonstrate:

1. appreciation of the range of professional and personal skills and behaviours required by teachers;
2. initial knowledge of the range of psychosocial and cultural factors that can affect individual teacher effectiveness;
3. understanding of the elements of an effective learning environment;
4. skills and practices associated with organisation of the learning space; teaching strategies, behaviour management, lesson planning appropriate to the area of specialisation which students are enrolled;
5. ability to perform basic observational research roles in educational settings;
6. initial understanding of ethical and policy issues that affect the duties of a teacher.
