Many developing countries continue to be blighted by poverty, land degradation and other serious problems. How should the international community respond or can governments in developing economies address their own problems? These issues have become increasingly important in a global environment characterised by increasing interconnectedness of people and places. The widespread global changes have made the understanding of these issues more challenging but even more critical. This interdisciplinary course critically examines the major problems facing developing countries.

Objectives Specific objectives of this course are:
1. To increase awareness of the issues facing developing countries in a global environment.
2. To explore the alternative concepts and theories of growth and development.
3. To advance understanding of strategies for overcoming poverty, inequality and underdevelopment in developing countries.
4. To increase awareness of the role and limitations of governments in developing countries and international community in promoting growth and development.
