Knowledge management is a relatively new field of study, encompassing organisational behaviour, human resource management and information systems. Within this course the perspective adopted is that of a "whole of organisation" approach, with an emphasis upon the structural and human resource arrangements that support and maximize knowledge sharing. This course considers how knowledge management has become a focus for so many modern organisations, the structural and cultural elements that support knowledge-intensive organisations, the operation of 'communities of practice', the role of information technology (in particular groupware), the human resource management implications of implementing knowledge management and the processes of accounting for knowledge within organisations.

|Objectives||1.Determine the elements and factors involved in knowledge management in organisations, and development of organisational intellectual capital.|
2.Assess the basic elements of Intranet, Groupware and other integrative technologies use for maximising knowledge generation and use in organisations.
3.Determine the Human Resource Management implications of developing, maintaining and growing knowledge-intensive organisations.
4.Identify and evaluate the means of measurement and valuing of intellectual capital.
|Content||This course aims to ensure that graduates within the degree programs within which this course is offered can: |
*Describe or devise appropriate structural arrangements for a given organisation or organisational type that maximizes knowledge management practices.
*Describe the informal arrangements (including organisational culture, and the use of communities of practice) for a given organisation or organisational type that maximizes knowledge management practice within that organisation.
*Describe the human resource practices for a given organisation or organisational type that maximizes knowledge management practices within that organisation.
*Identify and describe the appropriate information technologies that might be employed to enable knowledge management.
*Critically assess the alternative means by which organisational intellectual might be valued within an organisation, and make the case both for and against the valuing of knowledge within organisations.
