Recording the rainforest canopy, collating marine animals on the rocky shores and capturing the flight patterns of birds and butterflies are some of the activities the Natural History Illustrator may be involved with in professional or community activities. This course provides the opportunity for students to interact with potential industry partners on a project participation basis while consulting with and supervised by the lecturing staff. There is a particular focus on the needs and professional requirements of the Natural History Illustrator in a working relationship. Industry partners may include the Royal Botanic Gardens, The Australian Museum and National Parks and Wildlife Service.

In order to participate in this course, students must complete a compulsory Workplace Health and Safety requirement. Students will receive full information on this Compulsory Course Component in the course outline provided by the school.

Objectives This course will:
1. Foster student participation and collaboration with professional organizations and the community.
2. Plan strategies for development of external projects.
3. Encourage an appreciation of bio-diversity and the regional environment.
4. Promote organizational skills and team work.
5. Develop skills and techniques to a professional standard.
6. Demonstrate the ability to apply critical self and peer assessment.
Content This course will enable students to develop a body of work to a professional standard through offerings which will include at least some of the following:
Professional and studio practice.
Artwork presentation.
Guest lectures/seminars.
Field research and application.
Application of technology to illustration.
Visits to the professional workplace.
Collaboration with industry representatives.
Printing and visual reproduction methods.
Risk Management and Occupational Health and Safety issues.
