Design Contexts 5: Design Research Methodologies

This course explores the history, practice and varying understandings of design research and compares these to more conventional forms of academic and social research. It provides basic research training in design relevant research methodologies techniques and suitable for students to pursue honours studies or use in industry settings.

Objectives On completion of this course students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of varying research methodologies in relation to broader theories about the production of knowledge;
2. Select and use, individually and as part of a group, appropriate methods for conducting rigorous and ethical design research suitable for academic and professional applications;
3. Exercise critical thinking and judgement in identifying, using and understanding various sources of information sourced through the research process;
4. Confidently express their research findings using appropriate oral presentation techniques and designed and written forms of communication.
Content Topics will include:
1. Histories, theories and practices of design research;
2. Design research and designerly knowing;
3. Design research in relation to other research traditions;
4. The ethical conduct of individual and group research.
