This course builds on the historical and theoretical context of Natural History Illustration in Australia introduced in DESN1550 and DESN1560 and investigates the broader aspects of its international origins, influences and relationships. Students will be encouraged to develop skills in research, analytical and written documentation methodology and seminar presentation.

Objectives Students successfully completing this course will develop:

1. An historical and theoretical basis for the contemporary study of Natural
History Illustration and its application to visual communication, fine art and the sciences.
2. The ability to communicate effectively through a range of verbal and written skills.
3. Small business and marketing principles for the Natural History Illustrator.
4. An understanding of the role and function of Natural History Illustration in society
5. A research methodology specific to Natural History Illustration theory.
6. A commitment to the study of Natural History Illustration

2. Contemporary Natural History Illustration and its application to the sciences
3. The history of techniques and processes
4. Wildlife photography
5. New technologies and their application to Natural History Illustration
6. Museums and collections
7. Library research - developing a literature search
8. Environmental ethics
9. Paper presentation
10. Copyright and contracts
11. Conserving and presenting artwork
12. Applying for grants
