Introduces the student to commercial photography and develops the role of the designer as image-maker. The role and responsibilities of the commercial photographer will be examined with relevance to the visual communication profession. Original and imaginative photographic solutions to design problems will be encouraged. The aim of this course is to develop an understanding of commercial photographic practices relevant to visual communication.

In order to participate in this course, students must complete a compulsory Workplace Health and Safety requirement. Students will receive full information on this Compulsory Course Component in the course outline provided by the school.

Objectives On successful completion of this course students will be able to:

. understand the role and responsibilities of the commercial photographer and their relationship with the advertising agencies and design studios;
. formulate original and imaginative design solutions using photography as the medium;
. exhibit the appropriate practical skills related to camera techniques, the digital medium and lighting techniques in a variety of studio situations; and
. understand and display knowledge of the requirements of the commercial printing industry.
Content Topics include:
1. Art direction - conception to creation.
2. Communication as a visual medium.
3. Psychology of advertising - semiotics and design.
4. Studio equipment - cameras, lights etc.
5. Studio techniques use of electronic flash and tungsten lighting.
6. Alternative imaging techniques.
