Drawing is an essential visual communication tool for graphic designers and illustrators. This course builds upon and applies established theories and practices of drawing as an essential skill for visual communication. Through project work students link theory and visual research to knowledge and practical skills including linear perspective, geometry, materials, media, drawing techniques and systems.

Objectives On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of the essential requirements in making drawings and technical illustrations suitable for graphic instruction as visual communication.
2. Demonstrate an ability to select appropriate drawing systems.
3. Critically evaluate graphic drawing styles and illustration modes and techniques.
4. Demonstrate technical capabilities in the use of relevant materials and equipment.
5. Produce technical illustrations that communicate the requirements of a given brief.
6. Demonstrate an awareness of new technologies relevant to visual communication drawing.
7. Prepare and present the results of research as it relates to drawing practice.
8. Demonstrate an understanding of terminology used to articulate aspects of drawing.
Content 1. Technical and scientific illustration techniques and media.
2. Experimentation and the exploration of a range of media and drawing instruments.
3. Introduction to the impact of new technology.
4. Research and referencing visual resource material.
5. Investigation and analysis of essential drawing systems and techniques.
6. Investigation of 3-D form and structure through drawing.
7. The language of drawing.
Replacing Course(s) DESN1210 - Visual Communication Drawing 2.
Transition DESN2211 replaces DESN1210. Students who have passed DESN1210 cannot count DESN2211 for credit. Students who have failed DESN1210 should enrol in DESN2211.
