Considers sensitivity to typography and demonstrates how it can improve the graphic communication process. Emphasis is placed on developing ability to select suitable type styles for prepared designs, and understanding typographic terminology.

Objectives
On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1 Have a knowledge of the evolution of type form, including recognition of the 'families' of type and the development of type as a communication art;
2 Demonstrate an ability to manually produce letter forms and lettering designs;
3 Be able to describe the features of various letter forms and typefaces;
4 Be able to select typefaces for a particular purpose;
5 Demonstrate an ability to use type imaginatively and clearly in a layout;
6 Display an understanding of type measurement;
7 Be able to make typographic layouts and designs as specified to a given brief within a time line;
8 Comprehend the nature and capabilities of typographic technologies.

4 Construction of letterforms
5 Characteristics of type
6 Applications of type
7 Visual organisation and grid structure
8 Legibility and readability.
