This course explores the various roles, functions and applications of visual communication design in contemporary society. It seeks to explore social significance of visual communication design as a practice that can be frivolous and profound, or ubiquitous and ephemeral.

Objectives On completion of this course students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of various roles, functions or applications of visual communication design;
2. Demonstrate a critical awareness of the social significance of various roles, functions or applications of visual communication design;
3. Competently conduct academic research and demonstrate relevant information literacy;
4. Competently express their research findings using appropriate oral presentation techniques and written forms of communication.
Content Topics will include:
1. Visual communication design as educative or informative;
2. Visual communication design as entertaining or playful;
3. Visual communication as frivolous or wasteful.
Replacing Course(s) DESN3000 Visual Communication: Forms and Functions
Transition DESN2004 replaced DESN3000 'Visual Communication: Forms and Functions' in 2014. Students who have successfully completed DESN3000 will not be required to complete DESN2004. Credit cannot be obtained for both DESN2004 and DESN3000.
