Design Contexts 3: How - The Design Process in Theory and Practice

This course examines various models of the design process in relation to design in general and visual communication design in particular. It seeks to explore how the design process has been modelled in theory and how these models function in practice.

Objectives On completion of this course students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of a various theories and models of the design process;
2. Demonstrate a critical awareness of the relationship of these theories and models to visual communication design practice;
3. Competently conduct academic and design based research and demonstrate relevant information literacy;
4. Competently express their research findings using appropriate oral presentation techniques and designed and written forms of communication.
Content Topics will include:
1. Theories and models of the design process;
2. The social and historical contexts of theories and models of the design process;
3. The relationship and relevance of theories and models of the design process to visual communication design practice.
Replacing Course(s) DESN2030 Issues in Design
Transition DESN2003 replaced DESN2030 'Issues in Design' in 2014. Student who have successfully completed DESN2030 will not be required to complete DESN2003. Credit cannot be obtained for both DESN2003 and DESN2030.
