The study of Natural History Illustration requires that students gain a diverse range of skills, concepts and knowledge which result in the effective combination of field studies with studio practice. This course introduces students to studio practice and methodology specific to the Natural History illustrator by exposing them to a broad range of studio techniques, concepts and processes. It provides students with the basis for understanding of the theoretical context of Natural History Illustration in the world today.

The course consists of two project blocks during which students will be introduced to studio practice and its effective collaboration with field studies.

Objectives This course provides:
1. An introduction to scientific drawing techniques and concepts.
2. Introductory knowledge and use of laboratory equipment such as microscopes and drawing tubes..
3. An introduction to a range of illustrative painting and drawing mediums and their application.
4. An introduction to the application of field work data to Natural History Illustration.
Content The course will be divided into two blocks during which students will gain experience in areas such as:
1. Studio techniques and application;
2. Introductory scientific drawing;
3. Introductory application of field work data;
4. Introductory skills in wet media such as water colour and air brush; and
5. Methodological concepts in project development.
