This course introduces students to the theoretical and practical concerns of photographic imaging. Theory of photography underpins the practical knowledge and skills necessary for design photographic imaging. The course establishes a foundation of photographic theory that enables students to develop skills essential to the visual communicator. It also examines visual content, visual perception, imaging techniques and photographic styles both in an historical and contemporary context. Students apply theory to practice through seminars and project work.

ObjectivesStudents who successfully complete this course will be able to:

1. Demonstrate an awareness and knowledge of the significance that photography and photographic imaging has to the design industry
2. Demonstrate an understanding of the elements and principles of design through the medium of photography.
3. Identify and appreciate the various genres of photography and their application to the design profession.
4. Demonstrate an understanding of the theoretical issues concerning photographic imaging.
5. Identify and display basic techniques in camera craft, traditional and digital processes.
6. Demonstrate an appreciation and ability to communicate using the terminology and syntax peculiar to the visual language of design.
7. Apply critical analytical skills to the production of photographic images.

Theory and application of photographic equipment and processes, including:
- camera types and application
- photographic digital capture devices
- optics
- exposure metering - basic sensitometry
- exposure controls
- colour and black and white photography and imaging - processes and aesthetics
- lighting
- current photographic printing processes.

Theory of visual perception.
Principles of composition.
Visual language of photography.
Contemporary issues in photographic imaging.

TransitionDESN1311 replaces DESN1310. Students who have passed DESN1310 cannot count DESN1311 for credit. Students who have failed DESN1310 should enroll in DESN1311.
