This course introduces students to the fundamentals of typography and takes a playful approach to exploring the relationships between typographic form, language, images, and graphic elements. Through a series of experimental projects students will develop an understanding of type in relation to scale, colour, form, juxtaposition and context of usage.
| Objectives | On completion of this course students will be able to: 1. Understand, at a basic level, the evolution of type forms and their classification into ‘families’; 2. Begin to identify many of the key structural features of various letterforms and typefaces; 3. Competently select and use appropriate typefaces for different applications that deal with issues of scale, legibility, and context of usage; 4. Demonstrate an understanding of the relationships between typefaces, language, images and graphic elements in creating meaning. |

| Transition | DESN1101 replaced DESN2100 'Typography' in 2014. Students who have successfully completed DESN2100 will not be required to complete DESN1101. Credit cannot be obtained for both DESN1101 and DESN2100. | ||||
