Design Contexts 1: What – Definitions, Theories and Practices of Design

This course introduces students to a variety of theories, definitions and ideas about the diverse field of human activity called design. It will explore these theories of design against the broader backdrop of relevant social theories and practices with particular, but not exclusive, emphasis on visual communication design.

Objectives On completion of this course students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate a basic critical understanding of some the key theories of design;
2. Demonstrate a basic critical understanding of these theories of design in relation to broader social theories and practices;
3. Conduct basic academic research and demonstrate relevant information literacy;
4. Competently express their research findings using appropriate oral presentation techniques and written forms of communication.
Content Topics will include:
1. Theories and definitions of design;
2. Theories and definitions of visual communication design;
3. The impact theories and definitions of design have on design practice and visual communication design practice.
Replacing Course(s) DESN1471 Contexts of Design and Technology
Transition DESN1001 replaced DESN1471 'Contexts of Design and Technology' in 2014. Students who have successfully completed DESN1471 will not be required to complete DESN1001. Credit cannot be obtained for both DESN1001 and DESN1471.
