Communication Honours III: Research Project

This course develops research skills in communication and media through the development of a research project. The research project may take the final form of a thesis or creative project. The course is conducted under the direct supervision of an academic staff member who is also the student's honours research supervisor. The course builds skills and develops competencies in: research design including literature reviews, identification of specific research questions, appropriate methodological approaches, planning and preproduction skills and techniques, and discussion and communication skills. Students will receive non-graded formal structured feedback from their supervisor on the student's progress at the end of this course.
| Objectives | On completing this course students will be expected to have contributed to a demonstration of: 1. the ability to plan independent research in communication and media arts; 2. the ability to engage with prior literature and creative material and articulate the relevance of the thesis or project to existing literature and work in the field; 3. the ability to select appropriate methods for collecting and analysing production material and research data; 4. a development of critical and analytical skills; and 5. time management skills appropriate to research at Honours level. |

| Content | 1. The content of the research project will be substantially determined by the student, in that they will choose, in consultation with the Head of School and Honours Co-ordinator, the topic of their thesis or creative project and on this basis will be allocated a supervisor from within this disciplinary area, 2. Research design including literature reviews, 3. Development of specific research questions, 4. Methodological approaches appropriate to communication and media, 5. Planning and preproduction skills and techniques, 6. Discussion and communication skills, and 7. Self-directed and autonomous work practices. |
