1. Demonstrate how communication is constrained and enabled using everyday examples.
2. Develop critical and creative thinking skills.
3. Develop an understanding of key concepts in discourse and other communication practices.
4. Develop an appreciation of the social, cultural and discursive constraints that affect meaning and effective communication.
5. Demonstrate how professional practice is shaped by discursive processes.
Content Through the grounded theory approach of this course theoretical abstractions will be discussed and located in the everyday practice of the media and communication sectors A problem based learning approach will be taken to study the content of documents and to observe professional and social practices. This analysis will consider institutionalised routines and behaviours such as modes of dress and speech, writing styles and presentation in relation to business, the media, government and communities. Students will also be expected to analyse their own social and academic discourses to see how these discourses shape and reflect student's own experience. As part of their group activity, students will engage in on-site observation of professional practice for one week during the semester.
