Media Ownership and Control

Explores the structures that govern the ownership and control of media and communication in Australia. It pays attention to the legislation and regulations, as well as to the economic, political, social and technological factors which govern the media. Includes comparative studies of media ownership and control in other countries.

|Objectives||This course will:|
1. Enable students to understand and appreciate the frameworks within which the media are owned and controlled in Australia.
2. Map the connections between controls (legislation and regulations) and forces (economic, social and technological factors) which govern the media.
3. Compare the Australian media context critically with that of other countries.
4. Enable students to formulate and evaluate present and future proposals to change the existing media framework.
|Content||1. Overview of the major contributing perspectives and theories of media ownership and control.|
2. Survey of historical and contemporary media ownership and control frameworks including legislation, regulations and policy directions.
3. Case studies of major media ownership and control events.
4. Policy development, evaluation and implementation.
5. Media ownership and control futures.
