Public Relations Issues and Strategies

Students will build on their knowledge of basic theoretical concepts to begin to explain and predict public relations practices. Students will work in small groups to conduct an analysis of communication strategies, activities and materials for local organisations. This will involve collaboration with organisations in the local community to survey and document the organisation's public relations practices. Students will produce public relations documents and undertake critical reflection. They will expand their public relations skills in workshops on issues management, strategic planning and professional writing.
In order to participate in this course, students must complete a compulsory Workplace Health and Safety requirement. Students will receive full information on this Compulsory Course Component in the course outline provided by the school.
ObjectivesIn this course students will: 1. Explore the dominant theoretical paradigms underpinning contemporary public relations practice. 2. Develop and expand their skills in public relations practice. 3. Develop their critical and creative thinking skills on real projects which pose real issues. 4. Examine a range of public relations activities through collaboration with local organisations. | ||||
ContentThe course aims to demonstrate the ways that public relations practice is, in fact, an exercise in applied communication. Working individually and in groups, students will produce and analyse a range of public relations activities and materials and work directly with local organisations with communication needs to produce public relations materials. Students will report on the nexus between theory and practice. | ||||

Assumed KnowledgeCMNS1090 and CMNS1290. It will be assumed that students in this course will have knowledge of professional writing practices and will have an introductory understanding of public relations practice. | ||||
