Foundations of Media Production

Recorded moving images and recorded sounds are edited and mixed, separately and in combination, to produce creative editorial content. This content is presented in diverse forms to make television and radio programs, Internet websites, and multimedia and other communication products. This course provides students with a comprehensive introduction to the skills, knowledge and ability required to produce media projects in post-production. Through a series of lectures and computer laboratory workshops, students will learn technical skills and respond to aesthetic experiences through the application of digital audio and video editing techniques as used in the production of media projects.

Objectives In this course students will be able to:
1. Competently use designated digital audio and video editing applications.
2. Use video and recorded sound as communication media.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of basic principles of media project design.
4. Apply selected communication theories and techniques in a range of media production settings.
5. Demonstrate integrated creative, technical, and analytical skills.
6. Critically and analytically reflect on professional practice.

The major project will provide students with opportunities to show their knowledge of media project development and design as well as communication and presentation skills. It will also contribute to the development of students' creative and critical judgment and professional communication practice by introducing them to problems and solutions encountered when creating editorial content.
Content 1. Introduction to communication using audio and video.
2. The historical development of media production.
3. Characteristics of sound and listening.
4. Critical viewing of stored moving images.
5. Audio-visual narrative concepts and applications.
6. Digital editing terminology, concepts and techniques.
7. Audio and video digital formats and file management.
8. Planning and producing media products and projects.
