Introduction to Professional Writing

Introduces students to the basic forms and techniques of writing required for communication practice in journalism and public relations. Students are set writing tasks which offer the potential for publication. Workshops provide the opportunity for students to develop skills to meet new writing challenges, to critically examine examples of professional writing, to discuss their own work with their peers, and to consider the role of the professional writer in various social, cultural and professional contexts. Students should note that CMNS1090 is not a remedial writing course.

Objectives At the successful completion of this course, students will have:
1. Developed writing and editing skills involved in professional practice in journalism and public relations.

2. Developed critical and creative thinking skills in examining and producing professional writing work.

3. Developed an understanding of the basic social and professional contexts in which contemporary professional writing operates and of the role of the professional writer within these contexts.

4. An opportunity for students to produce publishable written work and to engage with the challenges of creating real professional writing products.
Content This course covers
1. The basic forms and skills of professional writing practice in journalism and public relations. Building on the special techniques of news-writing, the course covers the use of various forms of writing used in the mass media, including media releases, news stories of various genres, opinion pieces, character profiles, reviews, anecdotal writing and editing of written work.

2. The role of writing and of the contemporary professional writer in relevant social and professional contexts.

Assumed Knowledge This course assumes a level of English literacy consistent with an introductory university writing course, and experience with the conventions of basic writing forms, such as essays and written narratives.
