Introduces students to the skills, knowledge and technologies required to analyse and produce documentary and factual video programs. It deals with some of the social, political and cultural implications of documentary film and video genres, focusing on codes of representation in the context of subject, producer and audience. Students will gain technical skills in the use of digital video production and postproduction equipment and facilities as well as increasing their abilities to understand and analyse documentary forms of storytelling.

In order to participate in this course, students must complete a compulsory Workplace Health and Safety requirement. Students will receive full information on this Compulsory Course Component in the course outline provided by the school.

Objectives At the completion of this course students will be able to:

1. Competently use designated video production and postproduction equipment;
2. Demonstrate a knowledge of narrative principles in documentary storytelling for video;
3. Develop their understanding of the principles and practice of video program design and demonstrate integrated creative, technical and analytical skills;
4. Use video as a creative communication medium.
Content Students will be introduced to program proposal and script writing, and will examine codes of representation as they apply to narrative film and video genres.

During the workshop sessions students will:

* gain increased understanding of camera, sound recording, titling and editing techniques;

* gain appropriate technical competence with video production, including aspects of production management;

* gain research and screenwriting skills for documentary video genres;

* develop an understanding of the social, political and cultural impacts of the documentary as a historical and contemporary media form;

* learn about specific crew roles, working in a team context to achieve individual goals.

Industrial Experience 0
Assumed Knowledge CMNS1230 or equivalent digital editing and post production skills for both audio and video; and an understanding of relevant principles of communication in the construction of audio and video programs.
