This course introduces candidates to the foundations of management and leadership theory within the clinical context. It comprises the definition and analysis of management theory, characteristics and styles of leadership and introduces individual, group and organisational structures. This course runs concurrently with Clinical Medicine Service Provision B which requires group work both asynchronously and in real time. Foundations of Clinicical Leadership and Management is designed to be largely theoretically based and self-directed.
ObjectivesCandidates will demonstrate their understanding of the theoretical aspects of leadership and management in their completion of online MCQs and their creation of a written critique of the main theories. Towards the end of the course, candidates will show that they are able to apply the theoretical base to a real life leadership or management problem and develop an approach towards its solution or prevention of its recurrence. | ||
ContentCourse content will be organised in themes across 3 main modules, each of 4 weeks duration: Defining Leadership and Management, Stepping into the Leadership Role; and Effective Teams (including: putting it all together). Content will be in the form of paper based and on-line readings and texts, online recordings and power point presentations, case examples and templates. Assessments will be multiple-choice examination (week 5), written critique (due post recess) and a problem solving design work (exam period). | ||
