Considers advanced topics in geomechanics such as plasticity theory, critical state soil models, non linear analysis, unsaturated soil mechanics, site investigation, in-situ testing, laboratory testing, interpretation of test results, and coupled transport problems in environmental geotechnics.

Objectives A1 Understand key concepts of plasticity theory and critical state theory
A2 Describe advanced methods for performing/interpreting in-situ and laboratory testing of soils
A3 Discuss approaches for site investigation
A4 Understand key concepts of coupled transport processes in soils
Content Topics may include the following:

* Non-linear finite element analysis
* Unsaturated soil mechanics
* Soil plasticity theory and critical state soil models
* Limit analysis
* Advanced laboratory testing techniques for soils
* Advanced in-situ testing techniques for soils
* Strategies for performing site investigation
* Flow and deformation behaviour of very soft clays
* Diffusion, advection, heat transfer and transport phenomena in soils
* Generalised Terzaghi theory of soil consolidation, theory of coupled consolidation and transport
