Comprises an introduction to higher-level theory of structures. Topics include: elementary plastic theory of structures with application for slab analysis and design, dynamics of structures, stability of structural elements and structural systems. Where it is possible, the topics are linked to requirements of Australian Standards. Revision is also made of the most common software used in the work force for advanced structural analysis.

Objectives A1. To know the terminology and be able to communicate topics of higher-level theory of structures at a professional level.

A2. To understand the basics of higher-level theory of structures.

A3. To apply the theory for solution of simple exercise problems.

A4. To know the major requirements of relevant Australian Standards.

A5. To know features and limitations of the most common software used in professional practice for advanced structural analysis.

- Hillerborg strip method for slab design

Compulsory Components
Compulsory Course Component Final Examination - This is the only individual examination, testing how a student meets the essential learning objectives in this course. To pass, students must score a minimum of 50% in this exam. Students scoring greater than 40%, but less than 50% will be offered a supplementary paper on request. Students obtaining less than 40% will need to repeat this course as students scoring below this level have not demonstrated sufficient understanding of the course material to be able to pass a supplementary assessment.
